The Soundpost patch is oval and its depth is 2/3 the thickness of the belly. It is important to keep the corners good as they protect where the ribs join at the C bouts from wear when taking the violin out or into the case. Above right shows the new wood at the corners and bouts. The new wood has to be treated to make it look old before varnishing . In order to make a sound post patch repair a plaster cast of the belly is made and Is your workbench allowing for clamping etc.
